چکیده

William Fairbank is tremendously lucky-or is he clairvoyant? He initiated the Stanford gyroscope experiment in 1961 as a search for the dragging of inertial frames by the earth's rotation-an effect so small as to be interesting in principle, but not in practice. However, today, twenty years later, just when technology development for the gyroscope experiment has reached completion, the theoretical framework for the experiment is changing. Physicists now see the experiment as a search for the gravitational analog of a magnetic field; and astrophysicists now invoke this "gravitomagnetic field" as a power source and alignment force for recently discovered jets squirting out of quasars and galactic nuclei. Suddenly the gyroscope experiment is a crucial test of the mechanism of the most violent explosions in OW univem. In this paper' I shall not discuss the gyroscope experiment itself; for that see Everitt [l]. Rather, I shall describe the new astrophysical motivations i

Gravitomagnetism and the Clock Effect

The main theoretical aspects of gravitomagnetism are reviewed. It is shown that the gravitomagnetic precession of a gyroscope is intimately connected with the special temporal structure around a rotating mass that is revealed by the gravitomagnetic clock effect. This remarkable effect, which involves the difference in the proper periods of a standard clock in prograde and retrograde circular ge...

Gravitomagnetism, Frame-dragging and Lunar Laser Ranging

Gravitomagnetism is a phenomenon predicted by Einstein’s theory of General Relativity, it consists in the interaction generated by a mass current in a way formally similar to magnetism generated by an electric current. A number of experiments have been proposed and carried out to accurately measure the gravitomagnetic interaction. The LAGEOS satellites observations [1], using the GRACE models, ...

Jets in Quasars

In my review of jet phenomena in quasars, I focus on the following questions: How powerful are jets in radio-loud quasars? What is their composition? How are they launched? And why, in most quasars, are they so weak? I demonstrate the exceptional role that blazar studies can play in exploring the physics and structure of the innermost parts of quasar jets.

Relativity Gyroscope Experiment ( B ) : Gyroscope Development

The central element of the Stanford relativity experiment is a cryogenic gyroscope with a performance in space many orders of magnitude superior to that of conventional earth-boiind devices. In the early pllases of the program, a great deal of thought wa? given t o the problem of achieving the performance goal, and an entirely new gyro concept was developed by William Fairbank and Francis Everi...
